Jean-Etienne Fougerole is een Franse mediafiguur uit de literaire scene. Hij is getrouwd met een rijke erfgename, die alle voeling met de realiteit verloren heeft. Tijdens een televisiedebat promoot hij z'n nieuwe roman “A bras ouverts”, waarin hij alle welgestelden oproept om armen op te vangen bij hun thuis’. Zijn tegenstander daagt hem uit om de daad bij het woord te voegen. De zwaar gepikeerde Fougerole voelt zich in het nauw gedreven en gaat in op diens uitdaging om geen gezichtsverlies te lijden. Diezelfde avond gaat de bel in zijn poepchique villa te Marnes-la-Coquette. De overtuigingen van Fougerole zullen zwaar op proef gesteld worden…
